Photographer of the Week

Horst Faas

Horst Faas won a Pulitzer Prize in 1965 for his powerful images of suffering Vietnamese citizens. He went to extreme measures to gather some of these photos, almost dying from a leg injury caused by a rocket propelled grenade December 1967. The United States army doctor that nursed him back to health even thought he was a goner. This shows that he is truly dedicated to his craft. As the war ended, he put the traumatic experiences behind him, and returned to photography in 1978, solely as a tourist. What stands out most of Faas's photos is that he captured all sorts of aspects during the war rather than just focusing on troops in action. He would photograph soldiers sleeping to show the exhaustion involved in fighting for their country. Most notably was the photograph of the Vietnamese civilians, mainly women and children, sheltering themselves from shells and explosions in a ditch near Saigon 1966.
